Marie Tidball, local Penistone and Stocksbridge MP, has voted again for the biggest upgrade of workers' rights in a generation, through the Government's Employment Rights Bill.

Key measures in the Bill include “Day 1 Rights” for millions of workers, including protection from Unfair Dismissal and entitlement to Paternity Leave, as well as banning exploitative zero hours contracts and fire and rehire practices, and strengthening statutory sick pay.

The Bill will also establish Bereavement Leave, increasing protection from sexual harassment, and improving pay and conditions for teaching assistants and school staff through the re-establishment of the School Support Staff Negotiating Body.

These measures will also be beneficial for employers, helping to keep people in work, reduce recruitment costs for employers by increasing staff retention and levelling the playing field on enforcement.

Marie Tidball MP, Member of Parliament for Penistone and Stocksbridge, said:

“I was proud to be a member of the Committee for the Employment Rights Bill earlier this year. It’s fantastic now to vote for the Bill again as it makes its way through the final stages of the Parliamentary Process.  “The Government’s Employment Rights Bill is finally calling a time on the Tories’ scorched earth approach to industrial relations that led to the worst strikes chaos in decades. We are raising the floor on workplace rights to deliver a stronger, fairer and brighter future for the world of work in the UK.  “In the Lords, the Tories, Lib Dems and Reform tried to block key parts of our Bill. I voted against every single attempt to water down our Bill for workers’ rights. This pro-worker, designed to raise living standards, pro-business Government that has your back.”
