Marie Tidball MP has backed the Government’s new “Warm Homes Plan” to cut energy bills by £150, through the biggest investment in home upgrades in British history.

The Warm Home Plan is a £15 billion investment to upgrade homes, to lower energy bills and provide energy security for Britain. The reforms will cut fuel poverty for up to 1 million families across our country.

The Plan includes a free package of upgrades for low-income households, zero and low interest loans to get solar panels onto the nation’s rooftops, and new rules that mean every new home will come with solar panels by default. The changes will also make it easier for anyone who wants one to get a heat pump, with a new universal grant available.

The new Warm Homes Plan also introduces new protections for renters, enforcing the responsibility of a landlord to ensure that a home is safe, warm and affordable. These improvements will lift half a million families out of fuel poverty by the end of the decade.

The measures will be targeted at low-income families first, alongside a universal offer to ensure every type of household in the country, regardless of income, will have the chance to benefit from upgrades to cut their energy bills.

Under the previous government, home insulation installations fell by more than 90% between 2010 and 2024, with millions paying higher bills as a result. Many of the installations that were carried out were of poor quality, as a result of a fragmented and broken system of regulation. Through the Warm Homes Plan, Labour is ending that failure for good.

Marie Tidball MP said:

“Cutting the cost of living is my number one priority for Penistone and Stocksbridge. No one should feel a sense of dread when their energy bills land each month. I know, from speaking with hundreds of constituents, the impact high energy bills are having on families across our communities. The Warm Homes Plan will bring down energy bills by £150 a month per household. This is the important next step in solving the long-term issue of energy prices and costly energy bills for our country. The Government also recognise that the cost-of-living crisis is the number one issue our communities' are facing. That’s why, in addition to these changes, they are taking action to cut energy bills by £150 from April, alongside delivering this record investment to upgrade homes and bring down energy costs for good.”
