MP visits Cubley Hall as hospitality sector gets relief

Marie Tidball, Member of Parliament for Penistone and Stocksbridge, visited Cubley Hall, speaking with proprietor John Wigfield about the importance of the hospitality sector locally. Cubley Hall includes a pub, restaurant, and bar, as well as a band stand for live music and barn for weddings and events.

Mr Wigfield first opened Cubley Hall 44 years ago, converting it from being a children’s home. Marie has visited this local pub

since she was a child.

Mr Wigfield emphasised Cubley Hall’s role as a major employer of young people, whose soft skills – like communications and teamwork – are developed through their employment here.

Marie has raised the need for rate relief for hospitality for years, knowing the sector’s importance how much it has struggled over the last decade. The new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, has announced a 20% business rates cut for pubs, clubs and live music venues from next year, saving the average pub £1,100.

“I know that hospitality has been really struggling in recent years. That’s why I’ve been raising the need for rate relief for a long time – so I’m delighted that new PM, Andy Burnham, has announced a 20% business rates cut for pubs, clubs and live music venues.

“Like Andy has said, for too long, governments have stood by while cherished venues have disappeared from our local high streets. That changes now.”
